Shaanxi Normal University has Northwest China’s longest history, largest scale and strongest resources for Teaching Chinese as a Second Language. In 1965 the University began accepting international students, and to date has undertaken the instruction of over 3000 students from all over the world, establishing friendly, cooperative relations with a total of 62 schools and cultural institutions across the globe.

       The International College of Chinese Studies is comprised of five departments, including Department of Chinese Language for Foreign Students , the Department of Teaching Chinese as a Second Language, the Department of Chinese Humanities Education, the Center for Training Overseas Chinese Teachers, and the Institute of International Sinology . It is one of the testing locations for the “National Teachers of Chinese as a Second Language Certificate” designated by the China National Office for Teaching Chinese as a Foreign Language.

       Currently enrolled in the College are a total of over 400 full-time, long term language instruction students, undergrad students, and master’s degree students, in addition to around 380 short term language instruction students, all coming from various foreign nations.  Also enrolled are approximately 20 Chinese master’s degree students and over 150 Chinese undergrad students majoring in Teaching Chinese as a Second Language.  The College employs over 70 instructors, and 95% of 25 full-time instructors have already received the National Teachers of Chinese as a Second Language Certificate, and 50% of whom have either received or are currently working on a doctoral degree.

       Foreign students at the College are provided with the following course choices: undergraduate courses, six levels of long term language instruction courses, specialized study courses, summer and winter language strengthening courses, etc.  The University’s master’s and doctoral programs also recruit students from all over the globe.

       The College of Chinese Studies has two completely renovated classroom buildings, allowing for the instruction of up to 500 students at any given time.  Included are two multi-media classrooms, six language laboratories, a library and reading room containing 8000 books, a beautiful conference room, a student lounge, a recreation room, etc.
